Meet Ian
Kuotos Swim has been a valued Whitmore Lakes partner for many years, bringing expert coaching, safety guidance and a calm, supportive approach to open water swimming. Led by experienced swim coach Ian, Kuotos Swim helps swimmers of all abilities build confidence, improve technique and feel safer in the water. With sessions covering open water swimming, adult and children’s lessons, aquaphobia support, triathlon coaching and event preparation. Working closely with Whitmore Lakes, Kuotos Swim plays an important role in supporting safe, enjoyable lake experiences for first-time swimmers, regular visitors and those looking to develop their open water skills
Open water safety
Open water is part of what makes Whitmore Lakes so peaceful and rewarding, but it also means the water is natural and not temperature controlled. Conditions can change with the seasons, weather and environment, so every swimmer should take time to understand the water, know their limits and follow the safety guidance in place.
Solo swimmers must wear a tow float, and tow floats are required for all swimmers during the winter months. We also recommend Kuotos Swim’s open water and safety courses for anyone new to lake swimming or looking to build confidence. Children must be supervised at all times, and Kuotos also offers child-focused water safety sessions to help young swimmers learn important skills.
Most importantly, please remember Float to Live — if you get into difficulty, stay calm, float on your back, control your breathing and call for help.
Introduction to Open Water Swimming
Kuotos offer an Introduction to Open Water which we reccomend to all first time visitors. The course is a gentle starting point for anyone new to lake swimming, feeling nervous about open water or wanting to build confidence before swimming independently. The session introduces key safety guidance, cold water response, breathing control, acclimatisation, visibility, tow floats, rewarming and practical tips to help swimmers feel calmer, safer and more prepared in open water.
Specialist courses
Kuotos Swim also offers specialist technique clinics for swimmers who want to progress in open water. These small group sessions can support swimmers moving from breaststroke to freestyle, as well as those looking to improve freestyle technique, breathing, body position, stroke timing, sighting and open water confidence. Each clinic is shaped around the group, helping swimmers build skill, efficiency and enjoyment in the lake.
